Non Human Animals are the “Nigga” of the World

I adored John Lennon as a child. I grew up listening to the Beatles, and to John Lennon’s work. I recently remembered that old John Lennon song, “Woman is the Nigger of the World”. (CLICK THE SONG. CLICK IT. WATCH IT.) When I was a young one, I didn’t understand the meaning of the song, but I had a feeling that John Lennon was a boundary pusher, a speaker of truth, a voice for the oppressed, the marginalized, and the underdog. I loved so much of what he stood for; even as a young child. When he died, I remember mourning the death of such a free thinker, and I felt even then that the world would suffer without his insight. I had the opportunity one day and I planted a tree in his name. I knew somewhere deep within myself, that a loss such as his life was ushering in the era of thoughtlessness, conformity, and an end to empathy; the era of the SELF. expert option review uae

The song brought much criticism from many different camps; media, politicians, special interest groups, religious groups, and celebrities; even radio stations wouldn’t play the song. It was too dangerous to discuss. It hit too close to home; made people feel uncomfortable by reminding them of their shady history, reminding them of the inequality that was still very pervasive at that time. It was safer not to listen to the word. The word was offensive. Heaven forbid a sound that a mouth created which had long been buried, that had been used to denigrate people for so long, could now cause such a stirring within the souls of man; and woman. expert option vs iq option How dare someone take a pejorative word and try to reassign a new definition? Would this mean that people would be forced to think about their own biases? Their own prejudices? Would people be confronted with their deep seated hatred every single day while they happily whistled along to their favorite song?

In the  interview, John Lennon explains how he and Yoko came up with the song. In this video clip, he reads from a paper that was written by the then chairmen of the Black Caucus, D Ca. Ron Dellums, who wrote the following definition of the word nigger, reframing it in a way that fit with the times, which made it easier for people to understand. Ron Dellums said those many years ago, “If you define niggers as someone whose lifestyle is defined by others, whose opportunities are defined by others, whose role in society is defined by others, then good news! you don’t have to be black to be a nigger in this society……”

I would like to add expert option minimum deposit an addendum to his statement and say that the word, as defined by Ron Dellums decades ago is now applicable to non human animals; not to mention that humans are still enslaving other humans to this very day. The sheer numbers however are the reason why I will not be writing this essay about humans. Rather, I would like to focus on the more than 30 million non human animals who are massacred every single day unnecessarily for food and millions more who suffer in cages, behind closed doors; be it in a massive building in an industrial park, to a backyard of a trailer park, all at the hands of the human animal.

Non human animals are OUR slaves; our niggers in the 20th and 21st centuries. If John Lennon were alive today, I postulate that he would be vegan, and not only vegan, but would quite possibly lead the movement of anti-slavery for the rest of the creatures on the planet. Oh one can dream………….

You drink MY milk. You take MY babies from me. YOU force me to breed. You force me to produce milk for my slave owner; the human.  You deprive my baby of iron and sunlight to give him white meat for my slave owner. You kill me when I have given all the milk I can. I’m your nigger.

WE are your niggers you call “pets”. We are your trash. We are your play “things”. You have bred us for so long, and still do; despite that there are at least 17 thousand a day killed in shelters all around the U.S. alone. We are even often sold to rendering plants to make your soaps, cosmetics and body and hair products, or we niggers are often sold to research laboratories to become the tools with which scientists claim they learn so much about the oppressor’s body by studying his slave; his nigger.

We foxes are human slaves. We are your niggers; used for fur that belongs on our bodies; skinned ALIVE for shoes, jackets, coats, and human vanity; wrapped around humans; our oppressors, as a status symbol.

I am your nigger. I am a “bile” bear in China. My masters keep me in a cage, with tubes stuck in me, and they steal my bile from my body to enhance human vitality whilst stealing my own. I am nothing but a nigger, and I live in fear.

Humans make me their slaves; a nigger for their entertainment. They rip me away from my home and family whom I’ll never forget, and they beat me into submission, to perform ridiculous acts that an elephant would NEVER do in the wild. I’m a slave and I live in absolute fear.

My masters love to feed me at the lake, but do not realize that I am their slave behind the scenes, where I am just another nigger, getting my feathers plucked until I bleed in pain for coats, blankets, jackets, hair accessories, and more. MY slave owner does this to me even when I cry in pain; again and again until I’m eventually killed for food.

I am your nigger; and I have been enslaved for as long as I can remember. For years my masters have ridden me into the ground, and once used up, they show me no respect, but then kill or sell me to be killed for people in other countries who have a taste for my horse meat. I’m a slave. Here I fell and died from exhaustion.

We are your niggers; your human slaves to do with what you will; to throw chemicals into our eyes, to rub chemicals into our skin, to blow smoke in our faces, to cut into our body to learn how something works inside us, to use us, abuse us and throw us away when no longer of use in your cosmetic testing, and bogus research.

We are your niggers. We are your slaves whose skin you wear around your collars of your coats, your wrists around your gloves, your insides and outsides of your boots, your jackets and coats. Humans breed us. You don’t even know that we niggers are suffering; working for you; to end up in a pile of corpses; meaningless lives. All we know is fear.

WE are your niggers. We are your pig slaves that you treat like filth. You anthropomorphize us, you collect figurines of us because you love us nigger pigs so much, and then you MASSACRE us for your taste buds, because you love bacon, you love ham, and you love using our bones and fat to flavour your soups. We are slaves of man and we live in absolute fear of being beaten, bludgeoned and murdered.

We are your slaves and your niggers. You abuse your power of us; humiliate us and kill us. We neither could nor would do such a thing, as our minds are pure of these evil desires to denigrate others. Only the oppressor thinks up twisted games like this for his niggers. Only our human masters could do such things to those they see as only their niggers.

WE are your niggers. We are enslaved by you. We give you eggs to eat that are grown in the filthiest of conditions. We die and excrete waste on top of one another in these cages. We niggers cannot even turn our bodies around. Our babies are ripped from us and the males are killed as they are useless. We are your captives, the ends of our beaks are cut off and we live in total fear. We are the oppressed.

WE are your niggers. We are bred to fight for our master to make him money. Our master shows us no love, deprives us of food and water to make us mean, beats us, electrocutes us, pulls out the females’ teeth so we cannot defend ourselves when we are bred, our master makes us live in fear and excruciating pain. When we are of no use, our master dumps us to die, or we end up at a shelter where our chances of adoption are slim since master tried his hardest to make us mean. Now we are niggers of no worth; killed by the thousands daily just in the U.S. alone; branded un-adoptable due to what our masters have done to us.

We of the sea are your niggers. The oppressors aren’t happy enough destroying the land creatures, so you must try to enslave me and my kind as well, and make yourself our master, and us your niggers. Our beautiful fins make the slave owner rich. Once our fins are cut off while we are alive, we niggers are of no more use to our master, and we are dumped back into the water to drown.

Why vegan? For the animals. For the planet. For the health of us all. Before it’s too late.

Do They Know It’s Christmas?

Click the photo below to watch the video from the 1980s. I can see a lot of you are clicking and watching it. That’s awesome. Have fun. Now, take the time to read the rest of the post which took days to put together, and is MUCH more important.

Thank you.

But in our world of plenty, we should spread a smile of joy!
Throw your arms around the world at christmas time.
But say a prayer – pray for the other ones;
At christmas time, it’s hard but when your having fun.
There’s a world outside your window;
And it’s a world of dread and fear;
Where the only water flowing is a bitter sting of tears.
And the Christmas bells that ring there, are the clanging chimes of doom;

Well tonight thank God it’s them instead of you….

And there wont be snow in africa this christmas time
The greatest gift they’ll get this year is life…” – “Feed the World” – Sir Bob Geldoff

Is buying more stuff really giving?

Recently while attending an anti-fur rally, I saw some people demonstrating across the street. There were about ten of them, and they held signs which read, “Buy more stuff”. I thought to myself, “how clever! the perfect anti consumerist demonstration!” After I left my rally, I went over to find out just what these cats were all about. Since they were located in the area which until recently had been the camp ground for the Occupiers of the city, I thought for sure they were part of the Occupy movement; downtown demonstrating against useless, selfish and wasteful consumerism. How silly of me to give them that credit, and to think that they were being ironic, and signifying anti-corporate greed, and anti-planet destruction. When I approached one of the women holding a sign, i asked what they were all about, and her reply was that they were there for exactly what their signs said. Ok, keeping in mind that this was Black Friday, the biggest sale and shopping day of the year, I asked her why they needed be on the corner to convince shoppers to do what they normally do. I asked her if she had seen George Carlin’s “Stuff” routine. No, she hadn’t. She said, “People need stuff. I like to buy stuff. Everyone needs stuff. I just bought this coffee, and earlier I bought a scarf.” I think she was part of some “buy more stuff” cult.

Her partner came over; a strapping gent holding one of the signs, wearing a suit, carrying a few extra pounds over his belt, who had a beard, longish hair, and looked as if he might later, after the demonstration, head on over to his nearest comic book store for the latest Star Trek figurine or set off for the local science fiction festival. Hell, it might even have been the guy in the photo above, but I am not sure, as I downloaded it from the internet. So, I tried chatting him up as well to figure out the meaning of their demonstration; to no avail. I asked if he had seen the Carlin “Stuff” routine, and he said yes. I asked if he had seen the Story of Stuff, and he said yes. It was a very bizarre interaction.  It seemed like I was talking to someone whose brain cells had died long ago; or a follower of Jim Jones. Imagine the 21st century libertarian Jim Jones: The cult that instead of killing you with kool-aid, kills you by locking you inside your home, surrounded by the hoards of stuff that the cult has convinced you to buy. That’s what these people seemed like; members of some new cult, whose sole ambition was determined by some CEOs hidden away in some high rise building with bodyguards lining the halls. “Tell the people to buy more stuff; namely, more of OUR stuff”, say the CEOs. When I asked, “what do you think about the planet being finite,” he just responded by saying, “You need stuff. You need food, right? You need toilet paper, right? You therefore need stuff.” (At this moment he pointed to the sign and gave me a big smile) You know, I see mindless people all day long. I am often baffled how some people who are ignorant to the point of disbelief have managed to stay alive. One thing I don’t often see is a group of village idiots, who at some point in their lives will most likely win the Darwin award; huddled together holding useless signs, and protesting for others to do what they normally do anyhow.

And Now For Something Completely Different….

This year, Instead of joining the rest of the sheeple; entering the hustle of bustle of stores near the helliday, how about staying home with those you love, and instead, donating to some charitable organizations in the names of those whom you love?  This is a way to show your support for the well being of the planet, teach values of love and empathy, and a way to take a stand against massive, needless, destructive consumerism which is ruining the environment. Neither we, nor our children need more STUFF. However, what some people really need is more food this time of year.

Feed the World

Wouldn’t it be nice to feed the world this Christmas? The no. 1 way you can feed the world is to stop supporting the animal agriculture business, and eat a plant based diet. This unequivocally includes not supporting the multi-billion dollar DAIRY industry as well. There is plenty of information on the diary industry HERE or, HERE. The animal agriculture industry takes food out of the mouths of the starving, and turns it into what they call feed, which they then spray with chemicals and antibiotics for farm animals to eat, who will then be slaughtered needlessly to put on the plates of impoverished and rich alike, knowing no difference between the genetics; making everyone sick on the inside.

Instead of people showing a bit of self sacrifice, (which really is NOT a sacrifice at all, as being vegan I can say without a doubt that I eat better now than I ever have) people continue to remain in denial about the fact that their food choices are causing catastrophic consequences for other animals; humans and non, around the globe, support industries that are causing hunger all over the world. I have heard, “I am just one person, so what difference can it make if I don’t eat butter or cheese, or that slice of bacon?” Another I have heard is “I could not be vegan. I like eating cheese and/or (insert some part of an animal carcass here), or they live in fear of not being polite at a dinner party, and offending. The hypocrisy committed by people who think themselves compassionate and generous must be addressed; even if by something so harmless as LIVING UP TO YOUR VALUES of non-violence in the presence of others by refusing to partake in the cultural norm of butchery. Please; by all means, offend people’s sensibilities. Their sense of propriety and decency needs to be offended by people who live a system of values that does not condone murder. There will be no push from the government for people to adopt a plant based diet and vegan lifestyle in order to help feed the world, as that would remove trillions of dollars, and most likely cause a financial collapse. Big animal agriculture is funding the government and policies; so instead, yet again, of starting at the base of the river to solve a problem, (because we do not want to face real change, and want to continue with the status-quo) we go downstream, keep slaughtering non human animals by the millions per day for some facade that it is actually necessary, destroying massive ecosystems and polluting air, soils, and water, and we put band-aids on the problem of world hunger. We would rather spend billions of dollars sending food over to Africa on ships from the United States, rather than give money and have it produced locally for example.

Gifts of giving that match a compassionate person’s values

Regarding band-aids, and trying to make a difference downstream; which is mostly what people like you and I can do, as we don’t have billions of dollars to have a full out war against big agriculture conglomerates, here are some photos from the 1980′s Band-Aid: “Feed the World” campaign created by Sir Bob Geldoff, that appeared on MTV in 1984 around this time of the year. PLEASE CLICK ON ALL OF THE PHOTOS BELOW to see different organizations to whom you might consider donating this Christmas instead of fueling the “stuff” industry; helping fill more and more landfills, and taking away from the true spirit of Christmas and the season of “giving”. Giving can mean lots of things, but the most valuable gift anyone can give to their loved ones in the right now is to “Give” up the idea of what Christmas is via television and advertising, and give love and kindness to all those on the earth by saying NO to uber consumerism, and YES to donating to organizations that improve living conditions for ALL beings, including humans on the planet.

1. Animal Equality/Iqualdad Animal (one of my favorites)

You can watch them in action HERE. The 2010 protest will BLOW your mind.

2. Mercy For Animals

3. PCRM – Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

4. Animal Legal Defense Fund

5. In Defense of Animals

6. Vegan Outreach

7. Food Not Bombs

8. Center For Biological Diversity (

9. Gentle Barn (sanctuary)

10. Stop UBC – Like PCRM, 501C3 to stop UBC research on nonhuman animals

11. Friends to the Forlorn – Education & Outreach, helping THE Number One Most Abused and Neglected Dog Breed Today; from dog fights, to being bred continually, to breed specific legislation in cities that bans their existence, to horrific abuse.

12. BUAV – British Union For the Abolition of Vivisection (They WORK hard, and have LOTS of campaigns)

13. Born Free – Wild Animals Belong in the wild

14. AAVS – American Anti-Vivisection Society

15. Well Fed World – On the Ground Relief and Community Solutions

Lastly, for the easiest gift YOU can give to the starving humans all over the world, please click on the photos below to learn how to begin eating a plant based diet, and how to live a vegan philosophy; which I am sure fits with your value system of non-violence to all. If you can’t donate, at least you can START with your plate.

Please DO NOT donate to HEIFER (major animal exploitation, major use of fossil fuels in transport), OXFAM, (giving live non human animals) WORLDVISION, (taking your money to transport living beings to give that “one loaf of bread” to a family, but not helping teach them how to grow that bread) WWF where they are only promoting stopping extinction so they and other rich people can continue to hunt) the Sierra Club (who in order to save national forests, hold BBQs, and then do not reply to emails asking if meat will be served as most deforestation occurs due to animal agriculture) I tried finding recent information on the group, but a lot out there is propaganda from the Center for Consumer Freedom or says that they are getting more radical. IF ONLY!!) or MERCYCORPS, who are proponents of donating non human animals to families in other countries (which means exploitation and uber fossil fuel use for transport of these live animals), when instead, they could promote education about cultivation and obtaining and maintaining clean water. “Donating” living beings who will travel on ships to reach their final destination is causing suffering, pain and discomfort. This is EXPLOITATION and slavery. The ONLY thing these organizations like Heifer and Mercycorps should be proposing in order to feed the world is a plant based diet for everyone, and especially those in the United States, where one person consumes the amount of what ten people do in under-developed countries. If you would like to help starving families in the rest of the world, please stop supporting animal agriculture and become vegan, and MOST importantly, tell everyone you know about the lies the industries perpetuate to line their pockets, while killing billions of non humans AND humans alike. It’s all a game of PROFIT, and it is PROFANE. Remaining silent is complicity.

Give someone a loaf of bread and he/she eats for a day. Give someone seeds to plant to harvest and make their own bread, and he/she eats for a LIFETIME.

In all seriousness, I hope that some who’ve read this decide to make a donation to one of these organizations instead of buying trinkets. This, obviously includes animals as presents. Don’t be a shit. Don’t buy animals. One thing that is important to know is that at least one of these organizations has a donor matching program going on right now through the end of the year; for example, if you donate to Mercy For Animals, your gift will be matched dollar for dollar by a generous donor up to a certain amount. If you can afford to buy trinkets this season because you are expected to buy holiday gifts then it is only logical that you can give a little money to one of these worthy causes, if not in addition to, then in lieu of. If you would prefer, there is always doing a search in your browser to find a reputable animal sanctuary or rescue in your area, and giving them a donation. It is a better idea to give to local humane agencies rather than giving to the larger organizations, as that supports direct action. If however you cannot afford to give monetarily this year, please adopt the vegan philosophy to “afford” equality to all species. This is the easiest gift to give; the gift of allowing all beings to live free from suffering. Do the more than 25 million NH (non human) animals know that it’s Christmas? Yes. They know fear. They know they’re about to be killed. They wait in line to die. Their massacre will increase many times over during the holiday so that humans may celebrate their lunch and dinner festivities. Make the change for the holidays; and always. Be compassionate. The time to end slavery, breeding, exploitation, and murder of all beings is NOW.

Fur Free Friday Signs/Posters 2011

Look for your city’s Fur Free Friday demonstration, the day after that good old corporate holiday of “Thanksgiving”, and to do something unusual; bring some unique signs with you and go do a demo. They are already 18 X 24 PDFs for you to send to a printer. Have them printed and laminated. If you would like any of the five signs/posters I designed for Fur Free Friday, Click on each individual photo for that specific PDF file to download to your computer. Use Them! Share.

Raccoon Dogs mutilated in Asia for our vanity

Piles and piles of beautiful non humans skinned for vanity

Jennifer Lopez, Madonna & Kayne West KILL for vanity.

Not only are they ugly as hell, they are PAINFUL for the non humans.

Fur is disgusting. It belongs on the animal, and not on a vain, selfish, sociopathic human. Leave the fur on the earthling who needs it. How would you like to be skinned for a jacket for another earthling?

If you need a role model, why not look at the rapper, Waka Flocka below, and click his photo to watch a brief video.

Diary of a Dairy

Dairy AIN’T cool yo. CLICK THE PHOTO. Mooooooooooooo

Do you think you are a compassionate person? Have you ever really thought about what the word really means?  Below is one definition; but they all sound similar:

Compassion |kəmˈpa sh ən|
“Sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others : the victims should be treated with compassion. See note at mercy.”

So I decided to dig deeper, and to put mercy here as well:

Mercy |ˈmərsē|
noun ( pl. -cies)
“Compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one’s power to punish or harm : the boy was screaming and begging for mercy.”

Funny thing; when I looked up these two words, I didn’t see ONE mention of “others” or “someone” indicating only HUMANS. Funny that.

Watch this video if you have a shred of compassion and or decency inside you.

Oh, did you think that was an exception? HERE is another. Oh wait, HERE is another. Oh, wait again; HERE is another.

If you would like to read a bit more information on the topic of how dairy is unhealthy for you, you can go to this blogpost. It has links which are very informative. Reality BITES

, , , , , , , ,

Now THIS is the kind of snuff film I can sink my teeth into; snuff that is of the undead variety.

I have been seeing these two words, (vegan and snuff) pop up together in many searches I have done in order to find solid footage of the heinous corporate practices in the treatment of non human animals. In fact, someone typed that into a search today, and it took them to my page. If I look at my stat page, I can see what searches take a person to Vegangster. What exactly does “vegan snuff” mean?

It means absolutely NOTHING.

This term is nonsensical. It is a tactic used by people who are violent, love to kill animals, abuse them, eat them and protect their ability to do so, by spreading false information and insisting that vegans, (people who live as violent free a life as possible, and who want the world to be free of violence) put up videos for the pure enjoyment of watching suffering.

When I post video footage, it is to demonstrate the reality of what a day in the miserable life of a non human animal is like. I don’t sit around eating bloody popcorn and watching non human animals in cramped cages, crapping on themselves, dying on top of one another, and being murdered. The fear that is ABSOLUTELY evident in a non human animal that is being abused, and is about to be murdered is not something that gets my rocks off. In fact, it brings me to tears. There is no such thing as an unbeliever when it comes to the documented footage; there are only humans in denial because the truth is too painful, or because they want to protect what they deem is their right to use other species for their pleasure. Non human animals are being brutally tortured for humans, and it MUST be exposed. It must be revealed so people can make informed decisions about how to live up to the values they purportedly have.

I post articles and footage because it is taking place in reality; right this very second to be precise. I speak the truth, I make zero money for this, I speak up for the underdog, and I WILL show you what is not happening right before your eyes, but behind closed doors. Corporations making money off the torture, abuse, and murder of living beings will NEVER show what goes on inside their buildings, (if they did NONE of them would exist) they will do WHATEVER it takes to perpetuate the demand for their products by hiding their practices, even if it means perpetrating violence on other species beyond our wildest nightmares, and you can bet your sweet bottom that my purpose in life is to show you EXACTLY what you are buying, eating, wearing and murdering.

Speaking of snuff films, here is one about the life of egg laying hens who are caged and who are forced to pop out their periods for Mcdonalds, and many other restaurants all over the United States; restaurants who serve all kinds of chicken periods for salivating humans. Thank you to Mercy For Animals for the undercover investigation of the egg laying hen’s lives for Mcdonalds and other restaurants. By the way; as a man, I find it repulsive that the males of other species get the crap end of the stick. Did you know that most male chicks are ground up alive, as they are useless in the egg laying hen industry? Males in the dairy industry get it just as bad, if not worse, as they don’t get killed as babies, and live about two months of a life of hell because they are not females and don’t produce milk for humans, so they are forced to live their short lives as “veal” calves for a couple months in a 2 X 4 space, until they go HERE. Thank you to Igualdad Animal, one of my favorite organizations, for this investigative footage to show people what exactly they are supporting, and for their tremendous work in the rights for all animals of the earth.

Call it snuff. Call it vegan snuff. I call it a bloody, unnecessary reality that humans inflict on other species because we think others are here to serve us. Disgraceful.

Joaquin Phoenix isn’t a “vegan snuff” addict, and boy does he sure know how to narrate a film.

Let-go of the Ghet-to Diet

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Meat is murder yo; not only for the other creatures on the planet who are enslaved, confined, brutalized and killed needlessly by and for humans to fill their stomachs with dead animals, but animal meat MURDERS the human animals who eat them. The hood diet is gonna get you. Stop eatin that shit now before it gets you. Educate yourself.

Do children know who they are eating? Watch as a very smart young man takes video footage in Mc Donalds and films some of the children to see if they know about or understand what horror goes into the production and preparing of a little piece of carcass between two slices of bread for their eating pleasure; or, you could look for a gleam of the light bulb coming on in their eyes

A great thank you to Kevin from the FruitForLifeCo channel on youtube.  This lovely young, beautiful man spent his time to educate the youth about the unnecessary cruelty involved in their food.

COWS ARE SO CUTE – Watch these CUTE cows! Click the photo

Learning to cook is really the only answer. Cooking is the bomb. MURDERING is disrespect.

Listen to donnanlinkz talking about the Hood Diet. This system oppresses all living beings. Fighting the system begins with our plates. We can say F#%^ the system by eating healthy, not doing what we are told, not blindly believing what we are told without applying some thought to it, and most importantly, by being strong WE can have the energy and the guts to stand up for justice. For ALL.

Vegetables. What our bodies and minds need.

This brief FILM is of Colleen Patrick Goudreau giving a talk about fighting the system, foods, and she discusses key myths about veganism as well as excuses people make to avoid living a life of compassion for all. Thank you so very much to Colleen Patrick Goudreau for this amazing video.

This is what you need to feed yourself to be fit enough to fight the man.

LET’S Talk About “PETS” Baby….

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Let’s talk about you and me….

Let’s talk about all the good things and the bad things that may be….

Let’s talk about “pets”……..Let’s talk about “pets”………….Let’s talk about “pets”….

On the eve of the one year anniversary of my Puffa Wuffa’s untimely death at 8 years old, I wanted to do a blog about companion animals; those lovely, lively spirits who bless our lives with their presence, give us unconditional love, and show us what it is to give and receive love without any strings attached.

This blog is dedicated to Puffa Wuffa. I am glad you are finally at peace. Also, this blog is dedicated to my friend Petra in the UK, who I met on facebook about the same time Puffa became sick, and who recently lost her dear, beloved baby in the photo. This blog is also dedicated to Nerida and darling velvety and shaggy fluffy love Muffin, who recently passed on, sadly. I am also dedicating this blog to Queenie, who died at the Wayne State University undergoing horrific and cruel experiments. Her (according to PCRM) “chest was cut open so experimenters could install devices inside her. After a second major surgery to implant more instruments, she was forced to run dozens of treadmill experiments with catheters protruding from her body and incisions leaking bodily fluids, causing constant pain and distress. Hypertension was induced by reduction of blood flow to her kidneys. On June 29, 2010, Queenie—a former companion animal obtained from a Michigan animal shelter—was killed in the laboratory after one of the devices broke and retracted into her body. Queenie and many other dogs have endured traumatic heart-failure experiments at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.” The medical records for Queenie were obtained by PCRM through the Michigan Freedom of Information Act. Please sign a petition HERE that will automatically send the Dean of the University a letter.  This blog is also dedicated to the 6 MILLION or more cats, dogs and other “pets” killed in shelters just in the United States alone. Last but not least, I want to dedicate this blog to Crank, who after seeing one of the photos i reposted on facebook of a shelter cat who lived in his area, he took action and went and got his new love. She is the lovely grey babe Dikembe, below. She is doing well. Love to you all!

I always loved the fluffy ones. As a child I felt the non human companions living in my house understood me much more than the humans with which I cohabited. I recall warm days in the southeastern US, outside playing with my dog companion; chasing him round and round bushes till we were both tuckered out. Those are still some of the fondest memories I have of my childhood.

I try not to ever use the word pet these days. It’s difficult though, as it is a word that has been ingrained in all of us. The very word connotes ownership. I do not own the adopted animals that live in my house, but rather, they needed a home, so I decided to take them in. The alternative was most likely confinement in cages until someone else either adopted them, or they were euthanized.

This is my beloved little thing, the girl who came to me from Kitty Harbor, the most magnificently run cat adoption agency I have ever known. She came November 7 last year, 2010, and filled a hole in my heart that dear Puffa Wuffa left on November 2 when I had to euthanize her because she was in pain from a neurological disorder. Little thing has been the most joyous being in my life. They look quite similar it’s true, but Little thing has an extremely affectionate and empathetic side that Puffa hadn’t quite developed fully.

We humans love our furry friends. We adore them, adorn them ;but what I cannot understand is why on earth we also scorn them. How we can love them so much, while at the same time permit the confinement and eventual killing of more than 6 million a year in the United States alone, is stupefying. The animals killed unnecessarily for the meat industry which kill more than 25 million in ONE day alone, is horrible enough, but as socially trained speciesists, we who proclaim such love for our furry cat and dog friends, do absolutely NOTHING to stop the trade in animals, the breeding, and the perpetual cycle of suffering that goes on all over the country; from the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters, the shelters and puppy mills and backyard breeders are creating a cycle of death; leaving all its victims to die needlessly behind closed doors where the majority of people have no idea of the horrors of their existence. We have to get the word out to people who are ignorant of these facts.

The breed of dog most commonly euthanized all over the United States is the pitbull terrier; with the numbers showing about 60% the last time I researched it. These poor, sweet souls are so overbred in certain areas, like the southeast, or California, and in some areas you cannot even drive your car without almost hitting one. That’s how I found out about the agency I mention below who help pitbulls in Georgia. Many people still buy into the lie that is perpetuated in media and elsewhere, that these dogs are nothing but murder machines. Well I say, WE are the murder machines. We kill thousands of them a day; and not just because they fill the shelters, but because of BSL or breed specific legislation. You can look that up on Google. It basically says that a certain type of breed is banned from existence, and rather than “grandfathering” in the ones that are still alive, and allowing them to live out their lives, the pitbulls are rounded up and killed. All of them. These dogs are so abused, mistreated, neglected, forced to breed, made to fight, beaten and kicked and burnt by cigarettes all to make them fight more. Just read about what Michael Vick, a jock for the NFL did to the dogs that he had fighting for him. It’s one of the saddest things a person could ever see.  There is one organization in Georgia that tries to fight this growing problem by teaching young people how to desex their dogs to fight the population problem as well as getting into the community and neutering/spaying for free, and helping with other health needs. I found them on facebook long ago. Friends to the Forlorn Pitbull Rescue. Please donate to them if you can, or go to the etsy page where you can buy book thongs and proceeds go to Friends to the Forlorn.

Below is a letter I received last year on facebook from Friends to the Forlorn Pitbull Rescue.

Jason Flat: Hey Everyone,
I was just sitting at my desk trying to figure out how I am going to get all I need to get done, actually done. I was feeling burnt out and run down. It has been a crazy few months. This week was really crazy. Tomorrow is a day from hell. Yes, I was feeling a little down and overwhelmed. Then I received this email. The tears rolled down my face, which is fine with me.. keeps me honest. Yes, I will get it done, yes I will lose a little more sleep. Yes I will make my days 25 hrs long and I will handle what I need to handle. Why? cause I made a commitment. Why? because there are too many Sawyers out there and not enough Cynthia’s. Cynthia, Thanks for the email. This is why I do what I do..Your support is appreciated!

The email someone sent him:

Hi Jason,

I have been wanting to write this for some time, but have not been able to get the words right. Maybe I thought if I kept putting it off, it would magically write itself.

I was one of those people who never really thought much about pitbulls. It’s not that I disliked them, I just never considered them and I am ashamed to say that. I come from Laguna Beach, Ca where people bring their dogs into stores, sit with them at outdoor cafes and where there is a fancy dog boutique on every block. I have always loved animals, took in everything that came along when I was a kid. To this day I carry cat and dog food in my car and can build a dog house in record time. No animal has ever been unworthy of my time. I never saw pitbulls, didn’t know anyone who had them. They were….not my problem. When I moved to Alabama, everything changed. I would see dead dogs and cats by the road. Afraid, lost, unwanted and starving animals everywhere just trying to survive. It did and still does break my heart. Horses shot for no reason, dogs skinned and left in agony. However, it was the day to day attitude….the disregard for their well being, their safety, their quality of life that haunted me. I was so shocked and I hurt for all these lost and lonely souls. I will leave food, I will help spay and neuter, but what can I do, what good is the little I can offer when I can’t make a dent? People would tell me to forget it, “you’re just making yourself sad, who cares.” “Animals can take care of themselves, they like being free.” I would scan the roadside for my strays, do my small part, feel bad when days or weeks went by when I didn’t see a dog who always waited for me in the same spot. But I was doing my part, right?

Fast forward a few months and I started volunteering at a kennel. One day we got a call about a pitbull who had been found by the side of the road and was in very bad shape. The Vet believed he had been a bait dog and was so badly beaten, one side of his skull was sunk in and that might mean brain damage. The Vet also said he had begun to show aggression and people were afraid of him so he needed to be put down or moved. The rescue wanted to know if we could take him and we did. I happened to be sitting in the lobby when Sawyer arrived and I had never seen anything so “forlorn.” I didn’t even know what a bait dog was before that day, but there he was, all 31 pounds of him. Bones breaking out through the skin, head down, ears flat, tail so tucked we didn’t even realize he had one at first. He walked over to me, put his bony, misshapen head in my lap and began this slow, long wail. I had never heard anything like it and I honestly thought my heart would split in two. In that instant something happened, some crazy, unbreakable bond was made. I never in my life expected to fall in love with a pitbull, but I did. Maybe it’s because I didn’t see a breed, I saw another living creature who had probably never known a moment that was not full of pain. He became mine, I became his…..I’m not sure, but there it was. I was new to all this and naive in thinking that the wounds to his inside could be healed the way the ones to his outside were. That the scars I could not see, were the deepest, the ones that had caused him the most suffering. Those wounds would not close easily. We had our battles, Sawyer and I. Sometimes he won and sometimes I won, but neither of us gave up trying to find a way out of his past. I could see how badly he wanted to join in, to trust, to believe. I guess having never known love, he could only take a little bit at a time. There were some scary moments and almost everyone said, “put him down, he’s ruined.” “He’s only a dog and only a pitbull at that, those kinds of dogs are just meant to be mean.” “Get ride of him before he hurts you, pitbulls can’t be loving, they simply are not family dogs.” But there was a light in this dog I could not ignore. I spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars, we saw specialists and trainers….it was always two steps forward and five steps back. But Sawyer could only go at his own pace, he could only accept and trust so much at a time. My telling him it was all going to be ok, was not enough….I had to show him over and over and over again. It was more than a year before he would let me rub his belly without his eyes flying wide open and panic spreading all through him. A year before a little tap on the rear was a sign of affection and not the start of a beating. He does have a tail, by the way and these days it never stops. He loves petsmart, loves kids….the harder they laugh, the harder he tries to make them laugh that much more. I see the look of horror at first because their parents think my pitbull is destined to eat their children before their very eyes. He licks faces and fingers, follows the little voices carried on little feet and he is happy. Older people always ask to pet him, this now 65 pound pit sitting calmly while an old withered hand bangs him on the head….lol. I never know who will attract his attention first, or why he is drawn to someone, but it’s beautiful to watch. He has a sense and I have learned he sees things I do not. I don’t mind though, I’m just glad he saw something in me that day. That one day back in June that started so simply, but changed everything. In the year and a half sense then, I don’t know who changed whom the most. I do know that one broken and battered pitbull taught me more than anything else ever has about love and trust, about second chances and redemption. About forgiveness and hope. And something else that I can’t explain…’s probably that feeling I can’t explain that made me put this off for so long, but I don’t need to explain that feeling to you, to others like you because you already understand, you already know. I am happy to be one of you now, having seen that full pitbull body wag and knowing with absolute certainty that I will never, ever stop doing everything I can to end the wrong done to these dogs. So, I guess this was a VERY long way to say thank you….thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing your part and mine. For keeping it going until people like me could catch up. For getting it faster than the rest of us and for going on when you thought you couldn’t because these noble dogs have so much to give and deserve better than they have been given. I understand now and I’m hapy to have pittie fever which I am told lasts forever….lol

On another front, let’s talk about a few celebrities. Talk show hosts have taken on the topic, and have discussed the tragedies; and yet,  still, the breeding continues. Oprah has done a show on puppy mills. Ellen had someone create stamps to promote adopting shelter “pets”.

Then people like Whoopi Goldberg talk on national television on a morning show about how she thinks it is ok to buy “pets”, as it is her right. Enter the president. He had a chance to be a fantastic role model, and adopt a mutt. Afterall, HE is a mutt. OK, we are really ALL mutts. My point is, he should have stepped up and showed the country that mutts should have been preferable to purebreds, and that being a hero for the underdog was the right thing to do.  NOPE. He didn’t step up to the plate. He did not decide to be a role model. Instead, he chose to partake in the slave trade. It’s a slave trade. None of these non human animals give his/her consent to be bred. Over 23 % of shelter animals in the US are purebreds; not to mention the numerous purebred rescue organizations. There is absolutely NO need to buy a living creature. EVER. (Please do not even go there. No, I said don’t go there. Paying an adoption fee is NOT contributing to the slave/animal trade, OK? The organizations that run these adoption agencies NEED money to survive, so the non human, fluffy animals can survive too.) Hey, what the hell happens to all those cats, dogs, ferrets, ducks, pot-bellied pigs, etc that are euthanized? Well, they end up HERE; in perfumes, dyes, flavorings, shampoos, conditioners, cosmetics, cleaners, soaps, etc. Not very appetizing nor a very pleasant thought. They are discarded as useless pieces of trash; disposable lives in a disposable society.

So what’s the big deal? The big deal is that people ask what will happen to specific breeds of dogs and cats if there is legislation to ban breeding. What it boils down to is that humans like their “pets”. I once saw a man selling a purebred boxer puppy at my park where I jog for, get this, $900!  I confronted him, and I ended up being verbally abused, told i was an animal abuser, that I ate dogs, that I should stop breeding dogs, and more. I went home, ate my lunch, made a protest sign, and returned to the park to sit my ass down right next to him holding my sign which mentioned NOT paying for animals, adopting, and the number of these animals killed in the shelter per year; again mentioning the 6 MILLION in the US alone. I sat next to him and his girlfriend. Lots of people came up and asked me if they could pet the dog. I politely told them to read my sign, and that I was protesting selling a dog at OUR park, when so many are killed. One man said, “oh, it’s that freedom of speech thing again,” referring to me sitting there demonstrating against breeding and selling of living beings.  I’ll NEVER forget what he said, as it speaks to the main point of why people hate the idea of banning breeding. He said, “It’s anti capitalism what you are saying. Capitalism is GREAT. We are able to buy whatever we want, and that makes our country great. Everyone has the right to buy whatever he wants, and they SHOULD have that right.”  The “whatever” that this filth referred to was not only about cars, televisions, computers, big houses, and horribly cruel animal products like foie gras anddown comforters, but also extended to live earthlings as well. The BIG deal is that a) people want their pets to be like their clothing; branded; a status symbol to show the rest of humanity what kind of human they are, and b) if breeding is legislated, and non human creatures were no longer viewed as property, then this would also trickle down to the “commodities” that are living beings in the meat or, poisonous carcass for food industry.

As one person so intelligently said recently on facebook, (note my irony), “I have no problem with people who breed for a specific purpose, do all relevant health testing and offer a lifetime guarantee and support to the purchaser. As long as breeding animals and adopters are carefully screened and appropriately matched, I don’t think responsible loving owners should always have to forgo their ideal pet to try and fix other people’s mistakes. Responsible breeders will always take back a pet if it doesn’t work out. It’s not like our shelters are filled with well-bred pedigrees with stable temperaments and long lines of healthy working/family dogs”

OR this comment about the shelter dog imperfections as opposed to that of the purebred. Wait, I know you are wondering why she would mention this when we ALL know about purebreds. Hell, this extends and has for thousands of years to humans who are considered royals, and who don’t have enough mixing of genes to account for great immune systems, since they only consist of genes from one bloodline.

“Some people want more from a dog than just a pet. Dogs have been bred for many different purposes for a long time, and the people that still use them for these purposes can’t just get any old dog and make it work. If our spay/neuter laws were actually enforced we wouldn’t have so much overpopulation. Some pounds don’t even speuter everything that gets adopted, instead offering reduced speuter costs making it OPTIONAL for the new owners. I have worked and lived with animals my entire life. Owned both shelter animals and pedigree animals. Not every shelter animal is healthy for it’s entire life, there are so many genetic conditions that can develop without warning because nothing is known about the animals genetic past. Have you ever watched an animal you love have seizures or develop a neurological disorder? If you had you’d never begrudge someone wanting an animal with a health guarantee free of genetic problems.”

Lastly, the most common concern:

“If breeding is banned, then how would the number of animals in shelters sustain us for the rest of our existence?”

This last concern is the one that MOST disturbs me. Everything is based on human centrism.  The human concept that we DESERVE things, that everything exists for OUR pleasure, OUR enjoyment, OUR desires, OUR needs is just that; a human construct. We do not need to have cats, dogs, snakes, ferrets, birds and the like around for OUR pleasure. The slave trade MUST come to an end. I must admit; I adore my adopted furbabies who at this very moment are transitioning to a vegan diet, on Ami, from Italy. Sometimes I think I love them too much.  But, nobody said, and i mean NOBODY said, that it didn’t feel good to have furbabies around. It’s pure heaven for me to have my four adopted furloves around me. It’s pure joy to see their eyes light up….to watch them groom one another….to watch them play….to give them love. However, i have said it before, and i’ll say it again; I would give up ALL their love for my own selfish needs, if i could blink my eyes and make all breeding stop now. We should LOVE the ones that are here, and NOT create more.

I will end this blog post with a letter from a shelter manager:

A Letter from a Shelter Manager – anonymous in North Carolina

“I think our society needs a huge “Wake-up” call. As a shelter manager, I am going to share a little insight with you all…a view from the inside if you will.

First off, all of you breeders/sellers should be made to work in the “back” of an animal shelter for just one day. Maybe if you saw the life drain from a few sad, lost, confused eyes, you would change your mind about breeding and selling to people you don’t even know.

That puppy you just sold will most likely end up in my shelter when it’s not a cute little puppy anymore. So how would you feel if you knew that there’s about a 90% chance that dog will never walk out of the shelter it is going to be dumped at? Purebred or not! About 50% of all of the dogs that are “owner surrenders” or “strays”, that come into my shelter are purebred dogs.

The most common excuses I hear are; “We are moving and we can’t take our dog (or cat).” Really? Where are you moving too that doesn’t allow pets? Or they say “The dog got bigger than we thought it would”. How big did you think a German Shepherd would get? “We don’t have time for her”. Really? I work a 10-12 hour day and still have time for my 6 dogs! “She’s tearing up our yard”. How about making her a part of your family? They always tell me “We just don’t want to have to stress about finding a place for her we know she’ll get adopted, she’s a good dog”.

Odds are your pet won’t get adopted & how stressful do you think being in a shelter is? Well, let me tell you, your pet has 72 hours to find a new family from the moment you drop it off. Sometimes a little longer if the shelter isn’t full and your dog manages to stay completely healthy. If it sniffles, it dies. Your pet will be confined to a small run/kennel in a room with about 25 other barking or crying animals. It will have to relieve itself where it eats and sleeps. It will be depressed and it will cry constantly for the family that abandoned it. If your pet is lucky, I will have enough volunteers in that day to take him/her for a walk. If I don’t, your pet won’t get any attention besides having a bowl of food slid under the kennel door and the waste sprayed out of its pen with a high-powered hose. If your dog is big, black or any of the “Bully” breeds (pit bull, rottie, mastiff, etc) it was pretty much dead when you walked it through the front door.

Those dogs just don’t get adopted. It doesn’t matter how ‘sweet’ or ‘well behaved’ they are.

If your dog doesn’t get adopted within its 72 hours and the shelter is full, it will be destroyed. If the shelter isn’t full and your dog is good enough, and of a desirable enough breed it may get a stay of execution, but not for long . Most dogs get very kennel protective after about a week and are destroyed for showing aggression. Even the sweetest dogs will turn in this environment. If your pet makes it over all of those hurdles chances are it will get kennel cough or an upper respiratory infection and will be destroyed because shelters just don’t have the funds to pay for even a $100 treatment.

Here’s a little euthanasia 101 for those of you that have never witnessed a perfectly healthy, scared animal being “put-down”.

First, your pet will be taken from its kennel on a leash. They always look like they think they are going for a walk happy, wagging their tails. Until they get to “The Room”, every one of them freaks out and puts on the brakes when we get to the door. It must smell like death or they can feel the sad souls that are left in there, it’s strange, but it happens with every one of them. Your dog or cat will be restrained, held down by 1 or 2 vet techs depending on the size and how freaked out they are. Then a euthanasia tech or a vet will start the process. They will find a vein in the front leg and inject a lethal dose of the “pink stuff”. Hopefully your pet doesn’t panic from being restrained and jerk. I’ve seen the needles tear out of a leg and been covered with the resulting blood and been deafened by the yelps and screams. They all don’t just “go to sleep”, sometimes they spasm for a while, gasp for air and defecate on themselves.

When it all ends, your pets corpse will be stacked like firewood in a large freezer in the back with all of the other animals that were killed waiting to be picked up like garbage. What happens next? Cremated? Taken to the dump? Rendered into pet food? You’ll never know and it probably won’t even cross your mind. It was just an animal and you can always buy another one, right?

I hope that those of you that have read this are bawling your eyes out and can’t get the pictures out of your head I deal with everyday on the way home from work.

I hate my job, I hate that it exists & I hate that it will always be there unless you people make some changes and realize that the lives you are affecting go much farther than the pets you dump at a shelter.

Between 9 and 11 MILLION animals die every year in shelters and only you can stop it. I do my best to save every life I can but rescues are always full, and there are more animals coming in everyday than there are homes.

Hate me if you want to. The truth hurts and reality is what it is. I just hope I maybe changed one persons mind about breeding their dog, taking their loving pet to a shelter, or buying a dog. I hope that someone will walk into my shelter and say “I saw this and it made me want to adopt”. THAT WOULD MAKE IT WORTH IT!”

……and as the cartoon says, the same could be said for all the millions of cats, dogs, and more in the cages in shelters and pet stores too.

There IS no altruism in selling living beings.

Only YOU can make a difference. PLEASE share this post with your friends, family, and say NO to breeding of “pets”, and change the language of objectivity and ownership such as “pets” and “owner” to “companion animals”, “adopted furbabes”, “furry lovemuffins”, or whatever you like.  Changing language eventually changes our perception. It has to start somewhere.  NEVER be afraid to speak up when co-workers, friends, family or anyone around you are talking about buying a dog, cat or other earthling, and please inform them of their poor choice, and why. This also includes but is not limited to ferrets, turtles, frogs, pigs, birds, sheep, geese, chickens, bunnies, snakes, guinea pigs, fish, tigers, bears, elephants, monkeys (primates), seahorses and ALL living beings who like their freedom as much as ANY human does. They aren’t PETS. They are not toys. They are not objects on whom to perform gratuitous, needless, sadistic experiments. They were NOT put here for us to use and abuse as we see fit.  WE have domesticated them for our own selfish desires. Its time to put right what has gone terribly wrong. They are bred into a life of misery, and thanks to some of us, a very select few may get a small chance at happiness; but get one thing straight; they are NOT here for us; they ONLY enrich our lives, but WE make many of theirs a LIVING hell. AND FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, PLEASE STOP BUYING TOYS WITH BIRD FEATHERS FOR YOUR CATS, OK? I KNOW HOW MUCH YOU LOVE WATCHING BIRDS IN NATURE, SO WHY WOULD YOU PLUCK THEM SO YOUR CAT CAN RUN AND JUMP? GET SOME STRING. MAKE YOUR OWN TOY.

If you spend some free time on a weekend sitting in the grass, you will see many types other earthlings go about their business. There is a lot to see. Please see them. Please see that they have their own purposes in the circle of life, that doesn’t exist only for humans. Humans could never live if other of the most tiny (to the human) and seemingly insignificant and yet very ecologically important species were to go extinct; whereas if we were to become extinct, the planet and all species would flourish.

Suffice it to say that I have left out a LOT of information about what goes on in the lives of our beloved domesticated “pets”, vis a vis, our cats, dogs, ferrets, and more, for example, testing on these poor babies for cosmetics, chemicals, soaps, shampoos, foods, etc. I will leave you with the photos below to do the talking. These are a few of the THOUSANDS that are posted on facebook at any given moment in time by mostly selfless individuals who cannot tolerate abuse, neglect and murder, and who somehow manage to get the photos of the furbabes and post them on facebook stating “this animal to be destroyed on such and such date” (usually the next day!!) with a photo usually of a dog or cat, with a look of fear or sadness in his/her eyes. I encourage everyone to PLEASE be a voice for the voiceless. We are ALL animals; human and non human. We none of us should be “pets”, nor “its” nor anything of the sort. We all deserve a life of dignity. We are all earthlings. Let’s change the dichotomy that separates us into a union by starting with our words.

These dogs were not in a shelter in the US, but I wanted to give a feel for what these non humans go through for HUMAN greed. This is likely one of many photos circulating of dogs waiting to be skinned for fur with which to line our coats and jackets.

Back to the shelter “PETS”. I HATE that word.

Get a mutt from the shelter. Dogs and cats are NOT status symbols, do not exist for your pleasure, and are NOT here to match your furniture or clothes. TELL people the truth. 6 MILLION MURDERED JUST IN THE U.S. ALONE because of our selfish quest for the perfect “pet”.

From “GOT milk” to “NOT milk”: It Ain’t the 80′s, But You Can Still Be ALTERNATIVE.

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Let’s take a trip back….back to a much simpler time… back when I thought alternative meant a sideways haircut. Things were simple for me then. I never imagined the world outside my own sheltered life. When I was a young boy, my world consisted of music, hairstyles, looking cool, (or in the case of the photo below, me dressing up all girly like, my sister made me wear HER dress! NOT looking cool) having fun, socializing, and learning about the things in life which would become important to me. At the time I didn’t think much about the suffering of others. I believed what I had always been told; that the world was made up of what you saw, and that there was no bogeyman. I never imagined that my entire world was built on something so fundamentally wrong, that I would dedicate a large part of my life in future to it; the education of the plight of other animals, as they are the backbone that keeps our society working, and the education about healthy eating and the mind/body connection without the use of other animals.

It was right around the very year this photo was taken that my eyes were opened up to the cruelty that was done in the world. Pure happenstance had me at a friend of a friend’s house where he put in a beta tape of what i would now call some strange type of snuff film. This film had deaths; all types of deaths; human, non human, criminals, accidents, and what affected me most were the sheep at slaughter, and, the rich Caucasian couple in some faraway land snacking on a monkey’s brain while he/she was still alive, strapped into the middle of a table. (i recently found this very video after 27 years and re-watched. Still as horrifying today, glad to report.) These memories will haunt me forever, and were the reason that I began to question the relation between things; between my food and the death associated with it. It took YEARS before I became aware of just how pervasive the use of other animals was in our entire system; everything from cosmetics to flavourings, to tires to glue, to useless painful research which is done over and over in the name of science but only for earning people more grant money and not for good use at all, to the pet overpopulation which even has a price. This one shocked me beyond belief, as I had no idea what rendering was, and I had no idea until someone on Facebook posted a link on you tube about the uses of unwanted pets. All of these things led me to where I sit today; in the uncomfortable seat of someone who can no longer deny reality. That reality is hidden from plain sight, but billions of animals every single year are slaves for the human race; for consumption, entertainment, supposed “necessary” nutrtition, pleasure, necessary items, needless items, and the suffering continues.

Nowadays, things aren’t quite as rosy colored as they were for me when I was an adolescent. With the bombardment of advertisements telling us we need milk, it’s very difficult to get the real facts on dairy.  We might imagine some lovely cow named Elsie in the green pastures, living a lovely life, getting milked by a human daily, and being healthy and happy. As you will see in the videos below, that is entirely a myth.  Some of the information below is about the happy cow myth, and some is about the lies the dairy industry has used in their marketing ploys to get our money. It’s so ingrained in our culture that we “need” this elixir to grow strong bones, and it sure takes a hero to realize that what you see is NOT always what you get, and advertisements have no real information whatsoever.

  • Got The Facts On MILK? It was high time someone made a film documenting the health issues about dairy, and how the industry worth billions and billions will do ANYTHING to keep us supporting it, including saying we NEED it, when only baby cows need milk.

Only calves need their mother’s milk. Humans need human mother’s milk until around age 1, and at that point they can get their calcium and all the other vitamins and minerals in the plethora of foods available. Neither COW nor GOAT milk is designed biologically for HUMANS

There is one way you can still be alternative, or, think outside the box, and question the status quo. When people learn the truth about the dairy industry, especially vegetarians; or anyone for that matter, it’s always a good idea to give them information about ways of substituting things they love. Here are a few ideas for milk, butter and a couple types of cheese.

Almond Milk. Contains LOADS of calcium; more than cow’s milk without all the slaughtering and blood, and pus and infection and antibiotics. RECIPE:

Soak the almonds either overnight or during the day while you are at work.

Drain water from almonds. Put them into a blender. Add two medjool dates. Add 3.5 to 4 C filtered water. Blend for two minutes. Take a bag with a string on top and wrap around a bowl or pot or any similar utensil. Pour the almond milk into the bowl, on top of the nylon or cotton bag. Nylon is preferable, as it’s easier to clean. One can easily be found at a store. Mine was bought at a food cooperative, where it was sold to reuse when buying vegetables. Here is the nylon bag with string top drying after use and cleaning.

Now, watch as my lovely girlfriend unwraps the bag from top of bowl/pot, and pull string tight. Here she is going to “milk” the almond/water/medjool date pureé. I must admit, this was an amazingly fun activity watching her!

VOILA! She pours into a mason jar. ENJOY delicious “milk” without supporting an industry that mistreats other animals, and lies about the health benefits of the product they want people to buy to line their pockets.

For Whipped Cream? Try full fat canned coconut milk.  Simply put a can of organic coconut milk in your fridge. Wait a day. Open tin, and dump the very small amount of residual water at top into sink, spoon out cream and put on top of your favorite vegan pie, or pudding or whatever. It literally takes less than one minute. You could also dump the refrigerated coconut milk into a bowl, add some vegan powdered sugar, whip/mix/stir, and it makes the very whipped creamy goodness sweet!

Who Needs Butter, When You Can Make Futter? Futter; for all your faux butter needs

No need to use unhealthy margarine to replace butter that comes from abused cows. This absolutely quick and easy recipe takes 2 minutes. Be a cow’s hero. Click on the photo for the 2 minute Recipe.

Just in case you thought it was safe to eat margarines like Earth Balance, study up on palm oil. It is the latest fad these days with mega corporations. It is in practically anything and everything, and sometimes it isn’t even labelled as palm oil, but vegetable oil. It’s the cheapest, greatest thing for a company who doesn’t care about the environment or your health, but only cares about profit. These articles are now available for your perusal:

  • HERE is the ALTERNATIVE!!!: Vegan Butter, or Futter,  and here is my photo and recipe. ENJOY your futter without supporting the dairy industry.

If you absolutely feel the necessity to have pizza, why not make it yourself? You can always skip the cheese, and just do a red sauce with fresh garlic, basil and other vegetables, but if you are really craving melted goodness, try Daiya. It melts fantastically, and comes in three shredded flavours. We use the white Daiya for pizza and pasta very infrequently, and use the mexi Daiya infrequently when we crave beans and brown rice with a bit of spice!

If you are craving popcorn, why not pop a big soup pot full in coconut oil? MMMM MMMM good. We buy our raw, extra virgin first cold pressed coconut oil from a food cooperative.

Here is the delicious popcorn I made using the coconut oil

Baked goods come out fantastic with coconut oil; after all, it is an oil which naturally semi hardens at room temperature, so it has a similar consistency to your old butter you no longer want to use. Below is vegangsterARNP, myself, holding up my hand picked blackberry pie with coconut oil crust. The bomb yo; and the pie wasn’t bad either. Heh Heh.. Sometimes modesty isn’t the strong point of vegangsterARNP, but that’s ok. Being DYN-O-MITE ain’t easy!

If you miss cream cheese, I highly recommend making your own.

    • 1 cup extra firm (morinu 1% fat) silken tofu
    • 1 1/2 T fresh squeezed lemon juice
    • 1/2 T brown rice syrup, or 1 t pure maple syrup
    • 1 1/2 t low-sodium tamari
    • 1/4 t ground nutmeg
    • 1/2 t nutritional yeast flakes

Or, you could buy Galaxy Nutritional Food’s. cream cheeze,  I found it in Portland, at Food Fight, and at Sidecar for Pigs Peace in Seattle. It was the ONLY one without PALM oil, and it blew tofutti, (which contains palm oil) out of the water as far as taste is concerned.

As you can see, there is no reason in today’s world, with all the alternatives, to support ANY dairy industry. BE A COW, GOAT, BUFFALO, YAK, AND CAMEL HERO.

Roll Your Soulful Sushi

, , , , , , , , , ,

Sushi Rolls. Makizushi.

Vegan Sushi Rolls. Put anything you want in it that doesn’t have a face. Be creative.

It can seem daunting, but you will not regret it. Making the sushi rice is the most difficult part; or seems as much. It really is not as hard as it seems. The trick is to be present when you are cooking it. (or you could use a rice cooker)

Sushi Rice. Shari.

2 Cups organic sushi rice. (I buy bulk from a food cooperative)

2 1/4 C water

1 Tsp salt

1/4 C rice vinegar (to splash on rice right after you have cooked it and rice is still hot)

Tsp of evaporated cane sugar or other vegan sugar. (i recommend it, but it’s optional)

Measure 2 cups of sushi rice and pour into a pot that you will use to cook it. Wash the rice with water while stirring with a spoon. Carefully dump the cloudy water. Repeat maybe 15 times to get the water much more clear. Don’t be a perfectionist about it. The water doesn’t get completely clear.  Next, pour the rice into a strainer/fine holed colander. Dump the water out of the pot. Set the mesh strainer/colander with rice in it over the pot to dry for about twenty minutes to half an hour. Let it dry. (NO, I don’t know the reason why we let it dry like this, but I read it in several different places, so that’s what I did, and it came out great!

Pour the dried rice back into the pot. Add the 2 1/4 Cups water in the pot. Add a tsp of salt. Bring to a boil. Turn down to medium low heat; like maybe a number 3 on your stove. Keep an eye on it. Check the rice in about 10 minutes. You will know when the rice is done, as you won’t see any water, and you can lift off the top, stir, and you will see how sticky the rice is. Turn off the stove/heat.

This sounds complicated, but it is very easy. Pour 1/4 cup organic rice vinegar into a measuring cup. Add 1/4 tsp of sugar. Stir for a couple minutes until you no longer see sugar crystals. Pour slowly on top of cooked rice in different places in the pot while stirring the rice. Try to get it all over the rice. Set aside the measuring cup and stir the rice while it is still hot. This gives the rice a slight sheen, and gives it a bit of flavor which will enhance it when you are eating your sushi rolls. Before I made the rice I wondered why anyone would do this; but once you taste you understand! Cool the rice in the refrigerator for at least an hour. I made the rice in the evening and made the sushi rolls the next day. Why? When you use hot rice on a seaweed/nori roll, it can destroy and rip the nori. It’s that simple.

Making the rolls/makizushi

I bought a sushi mat. It cost $2.99. Lay the mat out. Put a sheet of seaweed/Nori on it. Look at the photo. Cut up ingredients in thin strips that peak your interest. I cut strips of carrots, celery and avocado. I buy cream cheese and products like this very infrequently, but the brand I used to make the makizushi was Galaxy Nutritional Foods vegan brand cream cheese. Get a bowl with ice water for dipping your hands in before you scoop out rice with your hands to spread across the seaweed sheet. Spread out the rice on the nori on top of the sushi mat. You may have to re-dip your hands in the ice water. It’s not too uncomfortable. :) When you spread the rice out on top of the nori sheet, please keep in mind it does NOT have to be anywhere near perfect; just try to spread it thinly and in a somewhat even fashion. Seriously; do not try to be perfect with this, as when you roll it everything comes together beautifully.

Spread out the strips of whatever goodies you have cut and put them on the sheet of nori like so.

Hold the ingredients on top of the rice with a finger or two while you roll.

Roll ALL the way to the end, and then slide slowly back; sort of tucking in your fingertips as you see in the photo. It only takes a couple times to get it right, but even the first one will come out fine. Don’t be afraid of applying pressure with your fingertips.

Voila! Here you have a sushi roll!

Once you have several, you will want to cut them. It is important to have a sharp knife so you are not slicing through them to roughly. A sharp knife is a wonderful tool for makizushi, to have those really nice clean cuts.

I can be lazy sometimes, so I bought already sliced and slightly pickled ginger.

Here you can see the yummy goodness that your stomach is waiting to digest!

Pour some wheat free, low sodium tamari into a bowl. Whisk into the bowl some garlic granules. Take an individual piece of sushi, dip into the tamari, and put a piece of pickled ginger on top. MMMM! Your body will thank you!

Share the recipe with everyone! Spare the non human animals!

Punk ass Pita

, , , , , , ,

This shit RISES yo! It puffs up and makes the best pita bread you have ever eaten. Slice it open and insert your food and there will be no mess.

Recipe (makes 10-12 pita pockets):

  • 1 tsp evaporated cane juice (wholesome sweeteners is vegan)
  • 1/2 cup warm water (somewhere between 95 and 105 degrees Fahrenheit for the yeast, my pleasing-yet-unreliable method is to stick my finger in and go, “hm, does that feel comfy for yeast?”)
  • 1 package of yeast (or if you buy it in bulk, about 2.25 tsp).

Mix these items together. Let them sit 10-15 minutes, it will form a big foamy head. This means it is happy. If there is no foam, it will NOT make your dough rise. This is because it is UNhappy. The yeast being dead or the water being the wrong temperature may also be contributing factors.

Separately, in a big bowl, mix together:

  • 3 cups flour (white whole wheat, King Arthur’s or Bob’s Red Mill organic)
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt

Form it as if you were making a volcano in a sandbox, a big mountain with a chasm in the middle. Pour in the foamy yeast mix, and begin stirring it with one hand. With the other slowly/intermittently pour in:

  • 1 cup warm water

Mix it in pretty well, and then take the whole fleshy ball and place it on a well floured counter or cutting board. Begin kneading it.

With this recipe, I continually flour the board generously throughout. I’d say I added at least 1/2 cup more of flour while kneading, in bits whenever it started sticking to everything. In fact, let’s add that to the ingredients for all of you pre-cooking recipe skimmers:

  • 1/2 cup flour (white whole wheat, King Arthur’s or Bob’s Red Mill organic)

Knead it for 15 minutes. Grab the front part of the dough and fold it back, and then push down with your palms. I love this part.

This is quite a vigorous workout for your yeast, as you could imagine, and so it needs a nice warm place to relax before the final race. Oil the inside of your mixing bowl, place the ball of dough in, then flip the dough (so that both sides are greased). Cover it with a towel, and put the bowl in a warm place (I actually set the bowl on top of a yogurt maker turned on, which provides a nice low-level heat. An oven turned on for a minute and then off for a minute should work well too)

Let the dough rise 2-3 hours, it should be double in size. Gently punch it down, pull it out of the bowl, and then knead it on your floured surface a couple minutes. The tear it into approximately 10-12 pieces.

At this point, move your oven rack to the lowest position in the oven (you will be baking there), and turn on your oven. You want it at 500 degrees. This is pretty hot, so listen carefully: when you open the oven, a gust/cloud/wave of burning heat will leap from the stove. So make SURE your face is turned away and you are out of the way. This blast of heat in your eyes hurts, so please look away.

Back to the dough. Take one the pieces, wet your fingertips, and knead it with your fingertips for about 10 seconds. Then put more flour down, and put the now-rounded piece in the flour, then flip it, and then roll it out with a rolling pin. You don’t want it too thin, maybe 1/4 inch. And as round as possible. Then set it aside for baking (note: I stack mine, but the bottom ones tend to stick together, I would recommend maybe not stacking them more then 6 high).

Once the oven is completely preheated (don’t begin until it is!!!), put your cookie sheet (or baking/bread stone if you have one. Hm, maybe a stone should be put in earlier, not sure) in the oven for a minute to warm it. Take it out, put some of the dough discs on it (I generally can fit 3/sheet), and then pop it back in the oven. After 4 minutes they should have blown up like a baloon, flip them. Bake them another 2 minutes. Take them out and put them on a cooling rack. Repeat until you’re done.

Make them. I usually make a double batch, and freeze half of them, as it is a bit time consuming; although it is worth the time. Make Hummus to go with it. You won’t be disappointed. Unless of course, you screw them up. ;) . No need to worry if you follow the recipe. They WILL turn out. They taste super good. They are magnificently easy to cut open to slip in your food.

You can even Roll a few to be 3/4″ thick and eat ‘em like english muffins, and eat with Futter vegan butter. When cooked in the shape of a muffin they REALLY have the taste and consistency of a muffin when done. You should leave some extra dough for this amazing treat!

Now fill your pita with all sorts of food: KALE! HUMMUS! PEPPERS! SPROUTS!

Slacktose Intolerance

, , , , , , , , , ,

This blog is dedicated with lots of hearts, ahimsas, namastes and love and light to all those people who take pride in having very high morals because they do not eat animals or animal products……..

………but who continually seek validation and make excuses for others who live a lifestyle they themselves protest to abhor; the one of violence. Sometiimes through prayer, and other times by adding these pretty sounding words onto their verbal or written speech, these people of high morals think that by doing so they will be able to reach the minds of others who are stuck in an abusive relationship: the one where people are partaking in the absolute slavery and exploitation of non humans. Sorry folks, but that is not so.

What we really have is a really good case of see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil. If it isn’t pretty to talk about, then we mustn’t do so when it may be offensive to the majority of the population. The truth makes people uncomfortable.  However, there is one good reason I can think of to discuss the facts, and it has nothing to do with us, but all to do with the billions of animals who are enslaved.

I think when people say that non vegans must not be pushed, or only be engaged about veganism (such a scary word I know; all about living a non violent lifestyle) very gently, (avoiding offensive factual speech or graphic photos) that it is nothing more than an excuse, and a sign of a slacker who cannot be asked to discuss the brutal realities of life. These people enjoy the beautiful things in life; not unlike myself, but whereas I enjoy beauty and happiness, I also see the grays and the blacks as well, and it is because of the dark horrible realities that are hidden away from light and from all our views, that I find it unforgivable to not speak of these things to people who are ignorant of these facts. These slackers would prefer to never speak of what they call negativity, not truly out of love or light or kindness for the feelings they may bruise, but out of fear; the fear that they will look bad, lose friends, make enemies or lose family members.

Not telling people when the opportunity presents itself, within reason of course, about why people live a vegan lifestyle is just plain slack, and does NOT help anyone but the person who refuses to discuss the facts. They are protecting numero uno, and are more concerned with being liked, and with not offending others with facts, rather than with being the messenger for the massacre.  (BTW, it’s NOT about BEING vegan, but rather about not paying for slavery and brutality.) It’s important to understand WHY we are vegan, and to be able to explain it, and not ever make veganism about the vegan, but about the OTHERS.

With regards to vegans who talk of the difficulty to EATING VEGETABLES, or loving the person but hating the act, or who think it pertinent to point out to other vegans that “you used to eat meat; you came to veganism at your own time, so let others do so as well!”; let’s clear this up now: THE OTHER CREATURES LIVING IN CAGES AND TOTAL DARKNESS CANNOT WAIT. I don’t think I will ever see your version of tolerance as a virtue, when it is only there as a protective shield which serves as an excuse to a) protect the person from the distress of having to discuss the painful reality of non human animals, b) a way to not put people off by discussing REALITY because GOSH we all know that if you are too graphic, people will just block you out, or c) again a coping mechanism for the vegan who is riddled with the guilty feelings for having at one time eaten animals, therefore they think they must understand the non vegan, accept them, EVEN when the non vegan KNOWS reality but has 20 excuses to not make the easiest change ever: the food on their plate. We aren’t discussing race, religion or political choices here. We are talking about abuse on a massive scale.

Just because it’s your family member, friend, or lover does not make tolerance OK. Letting go of the idea that we need these people in our lives who are not living in alignment with their values is a giant step toward living our lives in alignment with our own. It is time for a little tough love. Just like children need boundaries, so do all humans; and you can begin by not only setting an example of morality, but by expecting and demanding it from others.  It is true that people are not born knowing the facts of the realities of how humans control their environment, control the lives of all earthlings, and where our food, clothing and products come from. All of us who have made the decision to do as little harm as possible within our constraints were most of us at one time supporting an abusive and exploitative system of killing.

Nevertheless, once faced with reality, we made a conscious decision and effort to change. People should then come to the decision on their own that they can no longer be a part of the system of brutality and barbaric tradition, but they CANNOT come to this decision without first having the education, and second, without having a mentor who expects them to live up to the values they preach of non violence. It is then the responsibility of each one of these humans to seek out information to break free of the sick culture by learning what, and what not to consume; from foods to body products to clothing. All of this information is FREE online. It is NOT rocket science. I am sure we all do our best to help these people. I have offered numerous times online to help those who asked genuinely for help. However, I will not validate an educated person’s choice to continue condoning the slaughter of non human animals by the millions per day, nor will I excuse it, nor will I accept it in my personal life.

Tolerance is a good word if it is in regards to a personal choice that hurts no one. In the case of eating animals, dairy or eggs, there IS an entire group of beings who have absolutely no say in the matter. To have tolerance for people who condone this once they know reality is to be an accomplice. The question is: will your ties with friends and family be more important than living up to your values? If you claim to be non-speciesist, would you be more offended if your family or friends chose to eat baby humans? Furthermore, would you say something then!? Something to think about…

Psychology teaches us time and again that inconsistency is not a way to model good behavior, nor to get good results or outcomes. Nor do people change behavior patterns when they are continually rewarded for bad behavior. By bad behavior here, I am referring to living a cruel life, as opposed to as cruelty free as possible. Don’t get me wrong; I am all about educating people and also encouraging people who are going little by little who are genuinely trying and succeeding in giving up the animals parts and products to which they have been addicted for years of their lives due to the societal training, That said, I think tolerance for people who know the facts, but who view their contribution to cruelty as a personal choice just bloody insane. What’s more, patting people on the back for choosing to eat organic animals, free-range animals, organic milk or cheese, or organic/free range eggs OR for having one meal a week on meatless Mondays with no animals is asinine.

I have very little tolerance for those who have tolerance of this kind. I have zero tolerance for slackers and accomplices. This will NOT help the case to end the holocaust but will only hurt it as it makes excuses, exceptions and is absolutely a MIXED MESSAGE. People must understand they are paying for slavery and brutality. Then, and only then will people begin to be, if for no other reason, shamed into behaving like the decent human beings they claim to be. VEGANISM IS THE MORAL BASELINE. You can either be an actor or a slacker. THAT is your own personal choice.

About Last Night…

, , , , , , , , ,

Honey, I didn’t tell you but….er……..last night…..the condom broke!

Is PLAN B medication assisted infanticide? Is it an ABORTION! (OH THAT DREADED WORD!) Is an egg inside a woman’s body that has just had a sperm enter it a LIVING being? That is what a few pharmacists claim who have taken the state of WA to court and who have won their court case this week to essentially throw out the law from 2007 making it illegal for pharmacists to refuse to sell Plan B medication. According to Kristen Waggoner, the attorney for the plaintiff, regarding the 2007 ruling, “These regulations were not about access to medication. They were about appeasing the governor and Planned Parenthood, and a political agenda to stamp out religious objections to plan B.”

What IS plan B? In the document, you will read this little jewel: “There may be disagreement about the actual scientific operation of the drugs, or whether they are in fact abortifacients. The court did not admit evidence on either side regarding this issue, (WHY THE HELL NOT?) and instead accepted Plaintiffs’ testimony that their faith precludes them from delivering the drugs.” (BELOW the comic you will find the medscape mechanism of action of Plan B)

A pharmacist is now able to be a “conscientious objector” and refuse to sell this medication to a person, and would permit the pharmacist to get another pharmacist to do it. This can greatly affect the psyche of a person who goes to a pharmacy and gets a moral judgement passed on her. If one pharmacist has this ideology, another is to be working the same day to serve those who wish to buy this pill. There is however, NO enforcement of this, so pharmacies are able to work around this. Pharmacies are also permitted to not stock items which go against their religious or other morals.

Here is a video about the ruling.

Physiological Mechanism of Action for EC (Emergency Contraception)

The start of pregnancy is scientifically defined as implantation of the blastocyst in the endometrium of the uterus, an event that generally takes place 5-7 days after fertilization of the egg (Glaiser, 1997). There are three ways that hormonal EC may function to prevent pregnancy: delaying ovulation, preventing fertilization, or preventing implantation of a fertilized egg; the method of action depends on the part of the menstrual cycle the woman is in at the time of unprotected intercourse (Croxatto et al., 2001).

EC is not an abortifacient, and will not harm or cause teratogenic effects to an existing pregnancy (Glaiser, 1997; Croxatto et al., 2001). EC does not function in the same way as Mifepristone (also known as Mifeprex or RU-486), used for early first trimester abortions, which works by blocking the action of progesterone thus interfering with the establishment and maintenance of the placenta. Mifepristone also binds to glucocorticoid and androgen receptors and stimulates prostaglandin synthesis by early deciduas cells (Stewart, Ellertson, & Cates, 2004).

There was initially some concern that the use of EC might increase a woman’s risk for the development of an ectopic pregnancy, but a recent large scale review of the literature indicates that of over 33,000 women who used EC included in the studies reviewed, only 5 ectopic pregnancies were reported, which is the same or lower than the expected rate of ectopic pregnancy in the general population (Cheng et al., 2004; Farquhar, 2005).

Regarding defendant intervenors, from the document: “The Defendant-Intervenors are various individuals personally concerned about access to lawful medications in Washington. Two are HIV-positive individuals concerned that the success of Plaintiffs’ claims could result in the denial of lawfully prescribed and medically necessary drugs to combat their condition, based on the asserted religious or moral judgment of the dispensing pharmacist or pharmacy.” (and RIGHTLY SO!)

A dangerous precedence has been set here. interpretation of religion is only as good as the person doing the interpreting. This opens the doors for anyone with some type of moral objection to bring other cases before the court based on their personal beliefs, at the cost of people who may need urgent care. What will be next; Mormons or Catholics who refuse to sell condoms, or to refuse to sell AIDS medication to a person who has contracted HIV through drug use or related to a homosexual relationship? Will men who have particular values be unable to sell medication to women because they think women should stay home and not be out at stores by themselves? Will a Muslim be permitted to deny stocking lifesaving thyroid medication made from pigs? (OK, I think this medicine is HORRIBLE and that they should all be synthetic, but permit me the license just this once for artistic and educational purposes.)

You know, all this talk about morals and values and NOT about the actual mechanism of action of the medication have got me thinking. Maybe I too could be a conscientious objector. Maybe I could bring a lawsuit against the state for making me give Diabetes type II medication, or high blood pressure (hypertension) medications as I think they are a farce. I could say it is against my religion to sell these medications based on the fact that people DO not really need them, but instead need different eating habits. If I were to refuse medication to a patient, I would probably choose to refuse to sell diabetes type II medications, as well as cardiovascular medications, hypertensives, or any other number of medications that are just a pharmaceutical company’s wet dream, money making scheme. Instead, I would discuss with a patient how to change their lifestyle, and how to change what they ingest from dead animal parts, to living vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and fruit. By doing just ONE day of this I am sure the patients’ blood pressure would begin dropping rapidly, and the DM type II would shape up within a month.

One blogger in WA state’s essay about Plan B

Value Flakes:

are NOT just a cheaply priced cereal.

There are plenty of people who are value flakes too. They let go of their values at the drop of a hat for various reasons. Is there anyone in your life who has a particularly strong set of beliefs, but who has the ability to change his or her morals based on the people around whom he or she is surrounded? Are their morals like a veritable “light switch”; to be turned on and off at the drop of a hat? Let us examine what it is to have a particular set of morals or a system of beliefs, and how important it is to be consistent.

After perusing this blog, I am sure people now know what it means to be vegan. Deciding to live by a vegan philosophy is the natural evolution of a human whose eyes have been opened to the cruelty, who has seen reality, and who makes a conscious decision to no longer participate in the system of slavery within his/her constraints. As such, can a person who is really decent be able to turn their morals off and on at their whim to suit their own personal or professional needs? (I’ll use this green reusable shopping bag, and I will fill it with chicken parts.) Wait one minute here; isn’t killing bad? Don’t we preach non violence? Is not veganism about THE OTHERS? When did it become about US?

Here are some possible examples of these flaky people’s thought processes (whether they are vegan, or vegetarian or people who think of themselves as progressive and compassionate):

  • I am Pregnant, therefore I must not live as a vegan, and it’s ok to exploit animals just for a little while because I have a human baby inside me.
  • The people at my job cannot know I am vegan so I must eat this food on the plate, OR, the people at my job all eat meat so I will not be vegan.
  • It would be wrong to alienate my friends, so I will eat the food they offer me.
  • I am traveling, and when in Rome you know, OR, I cannot be vegan because what happens if I am in a rural Eskimo village one day and all they serve is meat? Then I would be living a lie!
  • It wouldn’t make a difference anyhow what I do; it’s going to happen anyway.
  • I am scared of standing out, and being different, so in this case I will make an exception, OR, I never want to standout, hence I will not be a vegan as that is too weird!
  • I only visit my family at the holidays so I can make an exception; no big deal.

and my ALL time favorite (not really, I HATE this excuse)

  • My girlfriend/boyfriend will not date me if I am vegan, so I can eat some cheese and eggs and meat now and again; it’s not going to make a big difference in the grand scheme of things. After all, maybe I can “convert” him/her!

What is wrong with the picture below? Since when did values become about our relationship with others, and how they affect US? Should not our values be about higher things? I am not talking about a man in the sky when I say that! There are many things that I could say are wrong about the picture, but I will choose one. Nowhere in the picture do I see anything about social justice. It is all about the self.  I think the self is only as important as the other beings around us. The dedication of one’s life for the benefit of others is in my opinion is one of the highest values one can have, and I dare say that most people would agree; that is until they have to make changes in their own lives. Those who vehemently oppose slavery, abuse, and killing, yet who conveniently “forget” about this and their ideals at times in order to fit in are just flaky, wish washy and self absorbed in my opinion. What kind of consistency is that? What role models are we if we turn our backs on those who most need us? Do the suffering cows, chickens, pigs, cats, dogs, snakes, sheep, birds, rabbits, turtles, ducks, earthworms, ladybirds etc. have a choice too?

The mindset of these value flakes goes something like this: “although I know what happens to make these “foods”, cleaners, etc, I will turn off the knowledge I have accumulated in order to suit every situation in which I find myself, because I cannot offend anyone’s feelings, I want my life to be smooth sailing, and I don’t want to be difficult.”

I think this thought process is absolutely flawed. When we make “exceptions” like these, not only are we making excuses to make our lives easier, but we are throwing away our values that we supposedly hold dear to us. Not only this, but by sticking to our guns and setting an example, we are SHOWING others that it is NOT ok to use others for our pleasure, enjoyment, and NEVER will be, no matter how hard they push. They may think it extreme to fore-go the meat and two veg meal, and the soap from rendering plants, but it is much more extreme to force others to suffer unnecessarily for our products. What others think is NOT important. The ONLY thing that matters is living up to our values we have developed over time. There is no other way to live our lives other than in accordance with the things we think are important, and in this case, the fundamentally understood value that bullying other creatures is WRONG.

I hold people to their word, I expect consistency, I never ask for perfection but am convinced that a person who can so easily drop the core values they hold is someone who is not only lacking profundity, but is also lacking self respect. Tolerance for this value flip flopping is rewarding bad behavior. Pretty soon a value flake will become a value fruit loop!!! Speak up. A friend in need, is a friend in DEED.

Has he helped you land that job?

Has he showered you with money to buy more stuff?

Has he made your grass greener than your neighbor’s?

Has he helped your family members do/have all these things?

Surely it must be because you PRAYED so much?????

What do ALL these things have in common?

That’s right, they are all about YOU.

Isn’t it time you began thinking about things OTHER than yourself? You could start by thinking about any of the following things:

  • Your friends (wait, you may already do that to some extent. Let’s expand a bit.)
  • Your colleagues
  • Strangers
  • Other countries
  • Other species
  • The entire planet.

NOW you are beginning to understand what life is all about, and I can tell you sucka, it ain’t about the shit before the photo of the HAND.

  • MAKE REALITY YOUR ENTERTAINMENT by LIVING it. Observe the little things.
  • Please do NOT waste time praying, when you can play an active part in your life, and the life of all beings around you. Religion takes accountability and responsibility away from you and puts it on someone else, as well as excusing bad behavior, and accepting the status quo.

Who is your God? Is it Jesus? Is it Yahweh? Is it Allah? Is your god a man who was a philosopher like Buddah or Confucius? Is your god the father of Jesus? For that matter, do you believe that Zeus is God? Do you believe that Jupiter is God? Do you believe in the many breasted Goddess? Do you believe in fairies? Do you believe in St. Nicholas? The fact is, most of us only believe the lies we are fed depending upon the culture in which we were raised, and that culture is there to control us, manipulate us, and to decide our morality for us. Neither tradition nor culture are reasons to believe in things you cannot see. Loving is magic, but loving unconditionally is not a virtue, for if you permit others to behave in ways which are a detriment to themselves, others or you, you are enabling. We should hold others to high standards always, and this is a protective measure for ourselves. If you give an inch, most people will take a mile. Religion is no excuse to make continual screw ups without consequences, and on who to lay blame when you do things incorrectly or when things go awry, or EVEN when things go as planned. You decide what is right and wrong through mirror neurons, your inherent notions and life long experiences.

I ain’t no sucka. I ain’t no religious muthafucka. I don’t sit on my backside hoping for things to go well. I get up and do things to actively participate in improvement.

Homeboy’s Hummus

, , , , , ,

This genuine hummus, or hummous recipe is from the Middle East. It was told to me by a Palestinian man who ran a wonderful shop in my home town. Only 5 simple ingredients. This is my hymn to hummus. Hummus deserves to be praised.

  • Chick Peas boiled
  • Tahini *see photo for brand I use. It is sold in most stores.
  • Lemon juice organic, or fresh squeezed *lot of work the latter, so I buy a jar of juice.
  • 2 heads garlic *you may not use all of the cloves from both, but safe to have two
  • Salt, to taste

NOTICE: you do NOT see extra virgin olive oil on this list. This is because the authentic recipe that I obtained from a native from Palestine did NOT call for it. Olive oil is not added to the hummus, but CAN be drizzled on top with a sprinkle of paprika in a bowl for serving, but NOT for making. NOW you know :)

Let the pictures tell the story.

Soak about 5 C dry chick peas overnight. Next day, wash and rinse, and cover with water about 3 inches over the chick peas. Boil them on high to start, then on med. high for about an hour and a half. Make sure they are not hard. They must be easy to blend into a paste. Chew one to see if they are done. It should be soft. Don’t worry about not using all them in your hummus. If leftovers, why not make a soup with them?

Commence with hummus. Add Joyva tahini 1/2 15 oz. can, then 2 C chick peas, then about 6 good sized cloves garlic, 2 more C chick peas, add tsp salt,  cover ingredients in the lemon juice. BLEND. These numbers aren’t as important as you think. Take a look at the photo below. Get an idea what your blender will look like before you turn it on to mix all the food together. You can ALWAYS add more of anything after you taste.

Look at photos. Make hummus. Don’t be afraid to improvise. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. It took me a few times to get it right. With a vitamix it is much easier, but I prefer to use what I have, and this blender is still kicking, so I don’t want to be wasteful. Make sure you remove spoon when you turn on blender after you have stopped and pushed down ingredients to bottom of blender. You will do this MANY times with a blender, but in a vitamix it takes about 2 minutes to make. I made hummus once in a vitamix. What a joy that was! Don’t be afraid to add a bit more salt, a bit more tahini, a bit more garlic, or a bit more lemon once it is all blended and you have tasted, to get JUST what you desire! PLEASE taste the hummus! A cook must taste the food to know that it is just right. As you can see from the photos, I make lots of hummus in one go, (This was 3 blenders full) and then I freeze it. It defrosts in a day, and is delicious. Please use glass containers, and do not freeze or heat plastic. Have fun!

Cocoa’s Blender Bling

, , , , , , ,

Buy some fair trade organic bananas. Cut in pieces, and put in a container in the freezer. Keep them there for a snack, or you can use them for any number of blender blings! I prefer to store in glass containers vs. plastic, and invested in about 15 pyrex glass containers a while ago with rubber tops which make reusing foods amazingly easy.

There is no need for supporting dairy farms to have a milkshake or a vegan smoothie. Nor is there need for honey or refined sugar. Enjoy this very simple vegan milkshake.

Chocolate Fruit Smoothie:

  • Frozen banana pieces about 1/4 a blender full
  • 3 TBSP Raw chocolate powder
  • 2 TBSP Peanut butter. I grind my own at food co-op and store in glass jar.
  • Cover the ingredients in a nut milk about an inch or two over the ingredients. I use THIS RECIPE for my almond/hazelnut milk.
  • 1/2 C organic maple syrup

BLEND for about a minute straight. Lift off top, taste, and add more of anything you think is necessary. It is great to be creative, and let your senses tell you how much to add. Take advantage of your kickin’ improvisational skills.

It is smooth and delicious and will make you all chocolatey inside.

Thai “Ketchup”

Practically Perfect Peanut Sauce:

The recipe is: throw all this stuff into a pot, heat it up on medium-high while stirring frequently (gotta get the peanut butter to break up) until it begins boiling, and then bring the temperature back down. It will end up smooth, and as mentioned, thicker than when it was boiling. Serve on top of veggies, on top of brown rice, on top of rice noodles, on top of bean sprouts, on top of salads, or anywhere you like.

  • 2/3 cups peanut butter*
  • 1.5 cup almond or hazelnut milk, or one can light coconut milk. i use my homemade nut milk
  • 2 1/2 tsp Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce (or “Rooster Sauce” as I call it, because of the logo)
  • 1/4 tsp ground pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 4 tbsp maple syrup (get mine bulk from co-op. It’s from Vermont, grade B)
  • 4 tbsp rice vinegar (i use brown rice vinegar)
  • 2 Tsp garlic granules

*The taste of peanut butter varies greatly, and any one will do. To keep the flavor consistent in this recipe by controlling the ingredients, I used freshly ground unsalted peanut butter I got at the local food co-op. Ingredients: peanuts. Period. But if you have adams or another type, use it.

Make this, then tweak it as your taste buds tell you. All nut milks are not alike, so trust your taste buds and add a bit more of vinegar, a bit more of chili sauce etc if need be. This is a great palette to start with, so get the ingredients and get going!

On top of 5 day old mung bean sprouts

On top of brown rice and vegetables
