Margarine is a luxury item. We do NOT need it. However, vegangster has decided to share this recipe with everyone as an alternative to physically and environmentally unhealthy vegan margarines on the market today.
Many vegans these days are using margarine, namely Earth Balance, in their baked goods, on their toast, on their baked potatoes with huge smiles on their faces, as they think to themselves, “hey, i am not supporting a cruel industry, and Bessie will not be impregnated on my behalf, nor have her milk taken from her for my sake, and I can sleep well knowing that fact.” Earth Balance is the NO.1 bestselling vegan margarine. Earth Balance is an Earth IMbalance. The company SUCKS.
Here’s a fact; most processed foods these days, including margarine contain a product called palm oil. In case you haven’t heard of palm oil yet, here is some information for you. According to RAN, Rainforest Action Network, “Palm oil is a globally traded agricultural commodity that is used in 50 percent of all consumer goods, from soaps and detergents to breakfast cereals and bio fuels. Grown on massive plantations in tropical nations, mainly Malaysia and Indonesia, palm oil has been associated with rainforest destruction; threatened extinctions of animals, including orangutans; huge increases in greenhouse gas emissions; and gross human rights and labor violations.”
If you would like a quick read on the subject, there is always Greenpeace, who mention palm oil “being a recipe for environmental disaster.”

As citizens in a capitalistic society, every dollar we spend is like a vote. When we make a choice to buy something, whether we like it or not, we are voting for that item. In essence, what we are saying non verbally every time we spend a dime, we are giving our approval of the product, accepting how the product is produced, and we are demanding that its production be continued. One might see where I am headed with this. One might ask how a person who espouses to live the most cruelty free life possible would even consider buying and using Earth Balance margarine knowing they’re supporting a massive corporation, (their product for sale in every podunk grocer in the four corners of the globe) and knowing the horrors entailed in the production of such an item.
There ARE alternatives.
I’m about to let you in on a secret: FUTTER. This is VEGAN BUTTER, and it’s da bomb!
1 Cup RAW coconut oil.
2 Tablespoons organic, extra virgin olive oil. I like Spanish, Italian or Greek oils. (OPTIONAL). I prefer without, but both versions solidify equally.
3/4 tsp salt
Pinch of nutritional yeast flakes (optional. if you add bouillon instead, be AWARE of palm oil in most of those cubes and also broth powders.)
Very small pinch of turmeric (NOT optional to make futter, as it not only gives futter anti-inflammatory properties, but the most lovely buttery color as well.)
These ingredients mixed together all harden and form a vegan butter spread to fool any butter eater. Put 1 Cup coconut oil in a sauce pan on low heat. Stir for about a minute, wait till you notice about 1/2 of coconut oil heats up to liquid, and take off burner, put on trivet on counter. Do NOT heat on burner for very long, and don’t allow liquid get HOT. This will prevent the salt, yeast flakes etc. to melt. They ONLY blend together when cooled (congealed) QUICKLY. Add to the coconut oil in the saucepan the following: tiny pinch turmeric, a bit larger pinch nutritional yeast flakes, and 2 Tbsp of UNREFINED, organic extra virgin olive oil. Mix all together. Fill a saucepan with water and some ice cubes. Pour contents of saucepan into a 2 C glass pyrex/glass container. Put your glass container with the FUTTER/vegan butter mixture in the ice water, making SURE the water doesn’t get into your glass container. WHY do you do this?? The FUTTER must congeal quickly. If you don’t cool the FUTTER quickly, it will take hours to solidify, leaving salt to sit at the bottom. When glass container is in the ice water, stir until congeals. This will take about 5 minutes AT MOST. This is like some amazing chemistry class you missed in junior high school. You will notice the color of your vegan butter suddenly becoming more opaque with the seconds… Eventually it will look like butter. After it cools, it has a consistency of butter. This recipe is simple. It’s easy. You can use this on potatoes, pasta, bread, or you can use plain raw organic coconut oil to make any baked good or any recipe taste delicious. Best part? Coconut oil is a replacement for cruel palm oil, and is nutritious and healthy for your body; including your brain, you can rub it on your skin because it absorbs quickly making a great lotion, and it can be used as a sexual lubricant – sex lubricant too, for monogamous people not using condoms. It works great in the sex department; just a tiny bit can be used, and has the best feel of any lubricant. Men will love it for their hand jobs. Please remember, DO NOT use with condoms. If you have a vasectomy, you are ALL good to go with your mate. Grab some buns and spread it on baby!
This is FUTTER vegan butter with Olive oil, as recipe above stated. It is optional, but I like it better with extra virgin olive oil. This photo was taken directly after stirring and congealing over a period of five minutes, so it still hasn’t hardened 100%, but will in the next hour. Clear to cloudy magic in 5. BTW, MARMITE=UNILEVER. BUY NO MORE.
Voila! Here is the FUTTER vegan butter 1 day after it was made. Look at the gorgeous color, the smooth and buttery texture on the butter knife, the way it melts on a piece of homemade toast. This vegan butter is definitely mistakable. Store in cupboard for up to two weeks; if you can get it to last that long!
UPDATE 2013!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: Futter is fabulous as a spread, but many people have asked me about baking. Here is an UPDATED FUTTER FAUX BUTTER recipe which is fabulous, and which absolutely CAN be used in any baked good instead of dairy butter or margarine. You will need a food processor for this, but otherwise VERY easy. No one who regularly supports the cruel dairy industry will even notice the difference; of that you can be assured:

This Futter counterpart, unlike Futter faux butter which can be found on Vegangster.org, This is truer to the butter consistency, and will be a more realistic butter experience for you if you were raised with dairy butter, or for those who are in your life who continue to not live up to an ethical lifestyle of not eating, wearing or using other species. Let’s get started:
- 3/4 + 2 Tbsp UNSWEETENED soymilk.
- 1 Tbsp Apple Cider vinegar organic and or raw
- 1 1/8 Tsp fine salt
- 1 3/4 + 3 tbsp melted Coconut oil, raw (or refined for no coconut flavor)
- 3 Tbsp sunflower organic expeller pressed oil, or other oil that is light, of your choice
- 2 Tbsp +3/4 Tsp soy lecithin granules
- 3/4 Tsp xantham gum
- 1/4 Tsp turmeric
Put the apple cider vinegar in the soymilk, with the salt, and then stir a few good times, and let sit for 10 minutes. Warm the coconut oil in the container in a pot with very hot water for about 5 minutes. Add the other ingredients (not the milk mixture) to a large food processor. Ten minutes later, add the milk, apple cider vinegar and salt mixture after ten minutes to the food processor. Blend on high for 2 minutes. Pour into glass container, cover and put in freezer for 30 minutes. Then remove and place in the refrigerator. Ready to use after a few hours, but best if you wait overnight. I like to make it at night so I can use it next day. This recipe came has been adapted by veganbaking.net, but I added turmeric to help add the yellow color, as well as anti-inflammatory properties, and I made the recipe larger, as I like to have butter around for baking, and other things. My recipe is 3 X theirs, and will just about fill a 4 cup pyrex container. Store in your fridge. Lasts over a month. You can leave it out for an hour before you plan to use it to soften it up.
Bake cookies, pies, cakes, cupcakes or anything you want with this. Make fudge with it. Top your pasta, potatoes, or other vegetables with this. Make casseroles with it. Make stews and soups with it. This butter is amazing.
Teach yourself about the dairy industry. It is horribly cruel and disgusting, the product is POISON for species other than the one producing the milk, and it is simply untrue that you need it or your children need dairy for strong bones. In fact, the countries with the LEAST osteoporosis consume the LEAST amount of dairy. GET YOUR FACTS straight on ethics and health. Do your research. Don’t ask the dairy industry, OR the goverment who takes money from the dairy industry about what you need in your diet. EAT YOUR VEGETABLES. GRAINS. FRUITS. NUTS AND SEEDS.
There IS right or wrong in life, and some choose to ignore it, or try to be politically correct and say that they cannot judge others, hence they do not live up to the ethics they claim to have, nor do they hold others up to baseline standards. Do not be one of those people.
